So you want to sell that Mountain bike collecting dust in the corner of your garage? This felt like a glimpse of another story to the ones we’re used to hearing from either the enthusiasts or the critics of religion: a story of uneasy coexistence, the persistence of supposedly extinct beliefs and practices, and how different stories about the world and our place within it may share a sense that there are certain places where the veil between time and the timeless grows thin.mountain

Big chunky tyres designed for muddy tracks are not the best for city streets, a gear range designed for steep mountain slopes may not ideal for urban areas, and although city cycling can be tough on a bike, it’s not nearly as tough as riding on a mountain – and hence frames can be overly strong (and hence heavy).

We’re looking for proposals for long pieces (probably non-fiction of one kind or another – essays, memoirs, reflections, interviews, dialogues – but we’re open to other suggestions) of 4000-6000 words that tell stories that touch on the experience of the sacred in a time of unravelling.mountainmountain

Turn right (east) and continue on Cave Creek Road (a.k.a. FR 24, Seven Springs Road) to FR 562 (Humboldt Mountain road) located between MCDOT mile markers 9 and 10. The turnoff is easy to miss—it’s on the right, paved and there’s a 562” sign about 100 feet up the road.

Most significantly, the Humanities are not taught primarily in preparation for employment, which seems to be the astigmatic purpose of most education in our time – for a career that ends when you retire – but in an ancient understanding of preparation for life, in laying the groundwork for cultivating a broad mind with interests that sustain imagination and curiosity in new aspects at every age.
